Background of the Study

Maternal mortality remains a significant global health challenge, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria, where the maternal mortality ratio is unacceptably high. According to the World Health Organization (2023), approximately 295,000 maternal deaths occur annually worldwide, with over 60% of these deaths in sub-Saharan Africa. In Nigeria, maternal mortality is reported to be one of the highest globally, with an estimated 814 deaths per 100,000 live births (National Population Commission, 2024). The majority of these deaths are preventable with adequate healthcare systems, skilled birth attendants, and timely medical intervention. Among healthcare workers, nurses play a pivotal role in reducing maternal mortality through patient education, prenatal care, skilled assistance during childbirth, and postnatal care (Ojo et al., 2023).

In Gombe, a state located in northeastern Nigeria, the maternal mortality rate remains alarmingly high, despite ongoing efforts to improve healthcare delivery. Nurses are essential in the delivery of maternal healthcare services in the General Hospital, Gombe, as they are directly involved in the monitoring and care of pregnant women before, during, and after childbirth. Their duties include conducting prenatal checkups, administering necessary medications, guiding labor and delivery, and providing counseling on family planning (Bassey et al., 2025). However, despite their critical role, the impact of nurses on reducing maternal mortality in Gombe is not well-documented. It is essential to assess their contribution, the challenges they face, and how these factors influence maternal health outcomes.

Understanding the role of nurses in maternal health is crucial in improving healthcare policies and practices. It will provide insights into the effectiveness of nursing interventions and help identify areas for improvement. This study seeks to assess how nurses' activities contribute to maternal health outcomes in Gombe, considering the challenges faced and the strategies implemented to reduce maternal deaths.

Statement of the Problem

Maternal mortality remains a public health issue in many regions of Nigeria, including Gombe. Despite various healthcare policies aimed at improving maternal health, the maternal mortality rate continues to be unacceptably high. While the importance of nurses in the healthcare delivery system is widely recognized, the specific role of nurses in reducing maternal mortality within General Hospital, Gombe has not been adequately assessed. Although nurses are the frontline workers in maternal healthcare, providing critical services like antenatal care, labor support, and postnatal education, there is limited research exploring their contribution to reducing maternal deaths in the region. This study seeks to fill this gap by investigating the role of nurses in maternal health outcomes at General Hospital, Gombe.

Several factors contribute to maternal mortality in Gombe, including inadequate healthcare infrastructure, insufficient medical resources, and the socio-cultural challenges that affect women's access to quality maternal care. However, one of the key areas that remains underexplored is the contribution of nurses in mitigating these factors. The absence of comprehensive data on the impact of nurses' roles in maternal health makes it difficult to design effective interventions aimed at improving the health and well-being of mothers in Gombe. Thus, it is critical to assess how nursing interventions influence maternal mortality rates and identify any barriers that may hinder the effectiveness of nurses in this important area of public health.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of nurses in reducing maternal mortality in General Hospital, Gombe.
  2. To identify the challenges faced by nurses in providing maternal healthcare services in Gombe.
  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions in improving maternal health outcomes in General Hospital, Gombe.

Research Questions

  1. What is the role of nurses in reducing maternal mortality in General Hospital, Gombe?
  2. What challenges do nurses face in providing maternal healthcare services in Gombe?
  3. How effective are nursing interventions in improving maternal health outcomes in General Hospital, Gombe?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant relationship between the role of nurses and the reduction of maternal mortality in General Hospital, Gombe.
  2. Nurses face significant challenges in providing effective maternal healthcare services in Gombe.
  3. Nursing interventions significantly contribute to the improvement of maternal health outcomes in General Hospital, Gombe.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The scope of this study is limited to the General Hospital in Gombe, where the role of nurses in maternal healthcare services will be assessed. The study will focus on the nursing interventions during prenatal, labor, and postnatal stages. The limitations of the study include a possible lack of cooperation from some healthcare workers, the potential unavailability of data, and the challenge of generalizing the findings to other regions in Nigeria due to contextual differences.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Maternal Mortality: The death of a woman during pregnancy, childbirth, or within 42 days after delivery due to any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy.
  2. Nurses: Healthcare professionals who are responsible for the care and support of patients, particularly in maternity wards, through monitoring, medication administration, and patient education.
  3. Interventions: Actions or strategies employed by healthcare providers, particularly nurses, to prevent, manage, or reduce maternal health risks and complications.
